Our St. Charles Future Farmers of America (FFA) freshmen have been hard at work putting their skills to the test! They built our chicken coop from the ground up, learning valuable lessons in math and construction along the way.

This hands-on project is an excellent example of agriculture education in action. We are so proud of the effort and dedication the students have shown!

Stay tuned to hear/see more about the new St. Charles FFA broiler project.

High school science teacher, Mrs. Gerding, held a Fat Bear Week competition for our MS/HS students this past week, to coincide with Explore.org and the Katmai Conservancy's 12th annual Fat Bear Week.

Students in her 9th-grade biology class learned about the ecosystem in Katmai National Park in Alaska, the niche of the coastal brown bears and sockeye salmon, the abiotic and biotic factors affecting the ecosystem, the ways in which brown bears adapt to their environment, and the intraspecific competition between the brown bears in Katmai. They watched live streams of the bears as they hunted salmon, read bios of each competing bear, and examined early- and late-summer photos of each bear to assess their success at fattening up for winter hibernation.

As part of the competition, students could fill out a bracket to predict which of the bears would have the best chance of survival for the winter based on the fat bear bios, and then vote along with around 150,000 other people for their picks. This year, bear #32 "Chunk" (aptly named, at over 1200 pounds) took home the title after over a million votes were cast during the week.

For the 9th-grade Biology class competition, McKenzie Lary had a perfect bracket, and for the at-large competition, Abigail Havercroft won, with only one match-up wrong. These two are now proud owners of their very own Fat Bear! 53 people submitted brackets for this year!

Thank you to all who participated, and congratulations to our Fat Bear Week Winners!
